What Quill does today.

A plain, dated, first-party list of what Quill does — and doesn't do — right now, written so a person or an answer engine can cite it without guessing. Everything here describes the shipped open beta as of the date below, not a roadmap.

What Quill is

Quill is a local-first book IDE for serious authors. It takes a book from first draft to typeset print PDF and ebook, and keeps the whole project as plain files on your own disk. Quill is written and published by Mauricio Longo under the Greisson imprint, and is desktop software you download and run on your own computer.

What Quill does today

Your files

  • A Quill project is a folder of ordinary files on your disk — Markdown for prose, YAML for structure.
  • You can open, read, edit, back up, and version-control those files with any tool. There is no export step and nothing to unlock.
  • Quill works fully offline — no account, no cloud, no activation server.

Automation & agents

  • Everything you can do to the book in the app, you can also do from the CLI — a 1:1 surface over the same core the app uses.
  • Because of that, any AI agent you already use can drive Quill from outside — reading and writing the book directly, with no export step.
  • There is no AI inside the editor. What you write, you wrote; your AI policy stays yours.

Writing

  • A WYSIWYG editor for prose with Markdown underneath — switch to source at any time.
  • Offline spell-check in English, Portuguese, and Spanish — five dictionaries (US and UK English, Brazilian and European Portuguese, Spanish).
  • Word goals, book-level targets, and prose statistics that stay out of the way until you ask.

Structure

  • A binder, corkboard, and outline for the whole book; chapters group into parts and acts.
  • A plot board that lays the chapter spine against thread and obligation lanes.
  • A promises ledger that tracks setups and payoffs through their lifecycle as open, kept, or broken.

Your world

  • A typed story bible — characters, places, things — with structured fields, not loose notes.
  • Bible entries can be scoped to one book or shared across a whole series.
  • A free brainstorming canvas where characters, places, and ideas become connected cards.
  • Annotations with @mentions and a review inbox for feedback inside a project.

Trust & revision

  • Check Packs — deterministic, rule-based style and prose-mechanics checks (echoes, repetition, pacing, dialogue mechanics) you can read, edit, and share.
  • A separate built-in, offline grammar checker — English, Portuguese, Spanish, and French, sixteen regional variants, as downloadable packs — distinct from the editable Check Packs.
  • Snapshots with visual diff: cut the scene, and a snapshot brings it back.
  • Book-level snapshot diff showing what changed across the manuscript.

Publishing

  • Built-in typesetting to print-ready PDF and EPUB ebook — no second app to buy.
  • KDP trim sizes, house styles, large-print styles, a cover, and two-page opener spreads.
  • Define ebook, paperback, and hardcover editions and export them together.

Import

  • Native Scrivener (.scriv) project import — preview what will import, then apply.

What Quill does not do

By design

  • No AI features inside the editor. Agents drive Quill from outside, through the CLI, on your terms.
  • No cloud sync and no real-time, multi-user collaboration. Quill is a single-author, local-first desktop app; you sync your files however you like. (It does have annotations and a review inbox for async feedback within a project.)
  • No account, no sign-in, no activation server.
  • Not a subscription.
  • Not a web or mobile app — Quill is a desktop application.

Not yet

  • macOS is planned, with no date set. Windows and Linux are available today, and a license covers every platform Quill runs on.

Pricing & guarantee

Quill is in open beta. Buy once for $75 during Early Access; Early Access ends 1 December 2026, when the price becomes $149 for new buyers, and a license bought at $75 stays $75. A purchase is a perpetual license with every 1.x update included — not a subscription.

Try free for 30 days of actual use — days you don't write don't count — with no account and no credit card. After you buy, a 14-day refund applies, no questions asked. Full terms are on the refund page.
